The plaintiffs represent professors, university staff mem-. bers, students and high school students who have been denied entrance to U.C., Santa Cruz. The class action suit charged that the university as knowingly discriminated in the hiring and advancement, of professors instructors; and employes and allowed discriminatory policies in admission of Chicano students. The suit, filed yesterday by Leon E. Panetta of Monterey, pointed out that of the total faculty membership of 350 at Santa Cruz only seven are Chicanos.

Of the non-academic staff, Chicano employment is only 5.3 per cent and none has high administrative posts. The suit alleges that of the total undergraduate enrollment of 4,094 students, only 176 or 4.2 per cent are Chica- FRAGGING TRIAL Witnesses Differ on Grenade Pin FT. ORD, (AP)-A defense witness has attempted to discredit prosecution testimony that a grenade pin found in Pvt. Billy Dean 'Smith's pocket was from a grenade that killed two lieutenants in Vietnam. Smith, a black GI, has pleaded innocent to the fragmentation grenade killings of the officers at Biena Hoa in 1971.

Prosecution witnesses had testified that striation marks on a grenade safety lever found at the death scene matched marks on a pin in Smith's pocket. However Leonard W. Boyd a metallurgist from Los Angeles, told jurors yesterday the marks "were a bad Boyd examined photographs the Army, contends show matching tool marks on both the pin and grenade handle and testified the photos didn't match exactly. But on cross-examination, he admitted his area of expertise is in damaged metals and metal failure rather than tool mark identification. Boyd added he never previously had compared marks on grenade pins and grenade handles.

nos, while the high school population of Chicanos in the Santa Cruz area is 30 per cent, and statewide is 16 per cent. Of the graduate student, enrollment of 325, only 3.3 per cent are Chicano, the suit charges. The plaintiffs also allege that more than 70 Chicano high school graduates were denied admission last spring. The suit said the figures reflected discrimination that was "not by law, but by the deliberate actions, decisions and policies of U.C. 'Santa Cruz officials.

"It is not done under the banner of bigotry, but under the guise of attempting to create additional educational opportunities for minorities. It does not forbid the hiring and recruitment of all Chicanos, but does admit a token few who are then forced to struggle under the most difficult of circ*mstances to Among the plaintiffs are the Concilio de Asuntos Chicanos, an association of Chicano employes of the university, and other groups representing the professional staff and students.
