What does 50% het mean? ›

A 66% or 50% het means that there is a 66% or 50% chance that the animal in question is het for the gene. If you crossed a 100% het pied to a normal, the offspring would be 50% hets.

Pastel Ball Python:

This morph is highly sought-after due to its striking visual appeal and the outcome when the pastel gene interacts with other morphs.

If you breed one 100% het to a non het animal, each of their offspring will have a 50/50 chance of also getting the one parent's het. Pair two with the same 100% het het recessive and you will get some visual morphs but all the ones not showing the recessive gene, will have a 66% chance of carrying it.

The Clown gene gives a dragon a set of spots along their body and neck, and tiger-like stripes down their tail. Appearing underneath these spots, on their upper arms and legs, are thick bands of a different shade than the main body color.

When both parents are het, either may or may not throw the gene, so you get a 66% probability. It's only once you breed the possible het animal that you either prove that the gene is present or not. If proven, then the animal becomes 100% het. If it does not prove, it is not het at all.

A basic guideline that I follow, and seems fairly commonly used, is that 100% "Het" means that at least one of the parents displayed the trait visually. If it's said to be 50% Het, then one of the parents is "100% Het". Anywhere between "50% Het" and "100% Het" means that both parents were "Het" to some percentage.

However, keep in mind that ball pythons spend a significant portion of their lives in burrows, where temperatures are cooler and more stable than the open air above. General air temperatures in a ball python's enclosure should never exceed 95°F (35°C)!

Clown is a recessive gene, in the ball python world this means in order to be visual it would need to be hom*ozygous (genes: clown/clown). Your 100% heterozygous ball python means it is 100% that it has a clown gene (genes: clown/normal). With other genes this is not the same rule.
