1 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 DIS 0 0 UH: Thumps Le to maintain share of lead FROM PAGE C1 er to the wall in right-center, but was thrown out in his bid for a triple. Blanchette took his latest victory in stride. "Just throw strikes and let the defense play," he said. "I threw the fastball and the change, and that's about all. And it doesn't hurt when your team is mashing the ball, too." Only three Warrior runners got as far as second base against Blanchette, who struck out five, walked two and threw only 101 pitches.

The Rainbows did most of their "mashing" in the second and third innings when they scored seven runs on eight hits. With one out in the second, Jon Viela hit a looper over second that deflected off the glove of second baseman Dean Banks and fell into shallow center for a single. After taking second on a wild pitch, Viela scored when Tyler Cheff's grounder to shortstop was muffed by Brandy Bengoechea. Singles to right by Kenny Harrison and Scott Craven scored Cheff. In the third inning, Tim Albert bounced a single to right, Dwayne Daughtry walked and Todd Takayoshi lined a single to right, bringing Albert home.

Derron Moreland grounded to short, with Daughtry scoring the second run. Then, with two down, Cheff hammered a double to right for a run that chased Misa. Misa was replaced by Andy Purcell, who gave up a single to left by Harrison and Largusa's two run double. SHORT HOPS: Lewis-Clark coach Ed Cheff was ejected in the fifth inning for questioning the calls of plate umpire Greg Poole. Unlike his father, UH third baseman Tyler Cheff stuck around for the whole game getting two hits, scoring twice and driving in a run.

In case of ties in final round-robin standings, runs scored will be the tie-breaker to decide the seedings for four" play starting tomorrow. Hawaii has a 10-run lead (44-34) over Wichita State. Both are 5-1 with today's final round to go. UH coach Les Murakami said he will start redshirt freshman Matt Apana (1-0) against UH-Hilo tonight. Scott Karl (3-2) will pitch tomorrow night's championship bracket game.

Todd -Takayoshi batted 2 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. The Rainbows brave had 17 sellouts in 28 dates so far this season. Turnstile attendance currently stands at 89,258. stad 2-4, 1 RBI; Kurt Stack 2-3, 1 RBI. Horiuchi said he remembers when Kaaihue would give less fortunate student-athletes money for lunch.

"He wouldn't tell anybody about it," Horiuchi said. "That's how he was." Kahahawai added: "No matter who you were, if he had the last cents in his pocket, he would give it to you. "We're going to miss him. It will be a big loss for most of his friends here." Kaaihue was McKinley's head football coach since 1988. He also was an assistant football coach at Iolani (1963-68 and 1971-73), Kamehameha (1969-70) and the University of Hawaii (1974-81).

Kaaihue earned all-star honors in football at Iolani in 1949 and 1950 while playing for the legendary Father Kenneth Bray. Kaaihue continued his football career and education at Compton Junior College in 1952 and later went to San Jose State, where he lettered in 1953 and 1956. After serving in the military, he graduated from San Jose State with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1959. He had professional football tryouts with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1959 and the Oakland Raiders in 1960. He later earned a master's degree in education administration from the University of Hawaii.
