Members of the Friends of Hillmoor group are throwing a star party and the public is invited.
Friends of Hillmoor members are teaming up with representatives from the Geneva Lake Astrophysics and STEAM to host a star party Thursday June 27, from 8:15 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the former Hillmoor clubhouse parking lot, 315 E. Main St. in Lake Geneva.
Rain date is scheduled for Sunday, June 30.
Lake Geneva City Council unanimously approved an event permit for the star party, June 24. Members of the City Council’s Finance, Licensing and Regulation Committee unanimously recommended the event permit during their June 18 meeting.
As part of the event, representatives from Geneva Lake Astrophysics and STEAM will have telescopes available for people to view star clusters, galaxies and nebulae.

Free tickets will be available for the event based on the number of parking spots available in the former clubhouse parking lot.
“Because we’re in the initial throes of trying to figure out how to open Hillmoor, right now, we just have the front parking lot and we have limited spots,” Alderwoman Mary Jo Fesenmaier said during the Finance, Licensing and Regulation Committee meeting. “It will allow us to control which cars are allowed to enter.”
However, residents who live near the Hillmoor property are welcome to walk to the event and attend for free.
“People will have to walk up to the main drive to that parking lot,” Fesenmaier said. “They will have to bring their flashlights because it’s not going to be lighted, and they will have to bring their own seating if they think they want to sit down for that.”
Fesenmaier said the former clubhouse parking lot is an ideal location for people to view the stars and other nighttime objects.
“That is absolutely a great location to look at the stars even though it is surrounded by light,” Fesenmaier said. “That spot is a little darker and up higher.”
Alderman Joel Hoiland questioned whether the event is being held at the appropriate times. He said he lives near the Hillmoor property and the sky is still somewhat light around 10 p.m.
“The best time will probably be later,” Hoiland said. “June 22 is the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year, so I just want to throw that out as a thought for the timing of it.”
Fesenmaier said she has been informed that the scheduled timeframe for the event is a good time to view the stars.
“This is the time given by the telescope experts,” Fesenmaier said.
